I got to see my neighbor’s for the first time. There they go. Dyed hair dyed hair. Cool. All right we got some cool young people in the building. Yeah. So I moved into a new place. Over the break and a fucking rocks. It’s like a big Studio. I shared the Uber guys here. All right gone. Take five Dana. I’ll just rip
Is that a fine? Hey, my name’s Matt today. I’m Aiden. So, we thought we would talk about what art we’ve bought this year. This was your idea right? This episode would be we wanted to do it like as our Christmas kind of wrap up but I got sick and you got maybe 60 this is like you know now it’s our New
Year’s episode. Yeah it’s a cool way to reflect like I think and just think about You know, all the artworks we have? Yeah, totally. Yeah, it’s a review of the hung up permanent collection. Social medias like, go 18. Yeah, let’s go one for one. So let’s just talk about. Talk about it.
He’s ate a bunch of food really quickly. Yeah. Well, the chicken was still in like in our mouth now we really want to go to sleep but like fuck it. We’re doing this dude. Yeah man. I’m feeling one way or another. I’m feeling it. I bought a print from Lucy bird. She was doing a sale on her Instagram, just around like the
Christmas New Year’s period and she had a whole bunch of I think they’re called cyanotypes. It’s like a way of printing with blue ink. I don’t understand how it works but some of the earliest photos were made with that process. So it’s like really old school. It’s like black and white where the black is blue. So it’s like blue and white, I guess and yeah, it was cool. It was kind of Funny or
serendipitous is something that was a bunch on her stories. And I just picked the one that I liked and she left it out, you know, I transferred the money and she left it out the front of her house and I went and picked it up. And then when I got home and looked inside a little note was inside, it said I’m really fond of this one and it was actually my first print that I ever made so well done for choosing that
cool. So I thought that was cool. Let’s get it out. I’m sure to please So there it is. And yeah, I really like it. It’s just like a very simple, composition of like a house or a barn side or something and then a photograph within that and yeah, jumped out to me and I got it was so cheap.
I won’t say how much it was. But it was like damn, dude. Sell it for more next time. Maybe that’s the price, I don’t know. Yeah, it’s cool. I like it. Yes, it’s simple. Yep. What’s that like fence? It’s like steel. Yeah. It’s corrugated iron fence like running diagonally. Ali and this photo that’s within the house and then looks like
someone’s like tea towel or tablecloth up again up on the like drying line. What do you call that? The washing line. Thank you.
It’s things going off. I’m going off spit. That’s be it. Yeah. The bond part of it. I don’t know. It looks a bit like a pen drawing or something. Yeah. It’s been like scratched in or etched or something. Yeah, it’s cool. Where would you hang it? Good question.
It’s small. So I think small works. I like to give like privileged places, you know, I don’t know. That’s a really good question. I still have to put hooks on a couple of other things. Things. So, maybe in that whole process, I’ll figure that out. But yeah, it would be fun to have it. Like, I don’t know somewhere where, you know, the best places
to put it in your house is where there’s like lots of light either underneath like a lie or even better yet next to a window, right? Otherwise, it’s like, no one actually looks at it. Like, yeah, you know, your house is, I mean, I got a nice bright new house and, and even still your house is brighter than mine. And yes, it’s it makes the curatorial decisions.
A lot easier, don’t you? Reckon? For sure just super light-filled room. Just everything looks kind of good. Even yeah, shit. Yeah. All the stuff that we have that, we’re about to talk about is like locals, like, not even like Australia. It’s like Sydney people. You know. Yeah. Totally. If you’re as good as gives you this kind of attachment to place
like I walked in here and saw that book that I got you for Christmas like the best pie way. Yeah. Which is like set in Sydney. Yeah. About like shit that we like like the fucking book. Got launched it Ashfield, bolo like right next to mine, Yeah, yeah. And all of that for me, like in that book when I see, like, just the cover. Yeah, cool. It’s like a really important way
of like placing yourself, right? Like yeah, I know it can’t be overstated. How significant leaning into like locality is, I fully agree. It makes it just makes me feel so good. I don’t know something about, like, I don’t know if we’ve spoken about this on the Pod before, but this, like, I’m pretty sure it’s a very common
feeling for Our Generation, but this like, A yearning for the kind of like community that we see and like, you know, cute movie depictions of like 1960s hippies. We’re like, we’re like yeah, they get to smoke drugs and hang out all the time and there’s no pressure and whatever. But I think what we really see, you know, the symbol that we recognize is the symbol of like, people who have chosen each
other as their community and their adult life and it’s like huge, you know, that’s just such a big thing that’s like kind of you got to fight for it or something we’re getting exactly. We’re going deep. All the sudden I get ya. I feel like everyone’s talking about that. Like everyone who’s kind of sensitively? Inclined. Yeah. They’re like the other half of my world is just like bashing
their yeah. Fuck it. No one needs that. That’s why was he shit? You just need money true but ya know that certainly comes. I’ve been getting that when I look at like shit from the 90s for more than 26 years. Yeah. No. I like think I am a hippie. Yeah, there’s something about hippies looks like really not on. Like it’s like deeper deeply
cringe. This slavery. Creepy about the sixties to me like this. Just some element about it. That is really creepy. That people don’t ever really talk about. What was that film? That fucking with the Joaquin Phoenix and it’s like he’s a started. Yeah, it’s like that film is like creepy as fuck like. And I think that’s what it probably felt like.
Yeah, I think it felt like, like horror. Yeah. I haven’t haven’t consumed much 60s content. Yeah. I’ve consumed too much 60s contentedly. You’ve listened to him to 60s music though. Jimi, Hendrix. Yeah, that’s about it. The valve, he’s you’ve listened to Captain beefheart. Is that 60s beefheart? Ya later is fully 60s.
Yeah. And he went on, he kept going into the 80s and stuff. I mean a few records I’m not going to say like I’m a yeah. Bob Dylan. Yeah. You listen deep the 60s shit. Yeah. All records anyway you had a face. Listen to those four records many times? No no territory. It was important to me like yeah at a certain point.
Anyway I was going to say like on that point Like something about like this extreme, local stuff, like it’s quiet, it’s quiet and you can comprehend it right? We’ll talk about it after, but I’m looking at your Alvin Willie painting and we bought that like together at an opening. And like I said, I didn’t know who he was, but I like saw him
right there. When I went to buy the work and that was cool. And now I have like a scent of the human behind it. And maybe it also has to do with the kind of Aesthetics of these paintings these like shimmery like all that. Let’s talk about them now, let’s just fucking, yeah, this can be the same. Yeah, but, but to like, Reiterate that like function of
the local is that I can almost feel the making of that work. Do you know what I mean? Because I’m so Tethered to its creation. Like, I saw it hanging. I’d literally saw the person who made it. Yeah, you know, like fucking hug them. Like, saw that heard their voice and share. Yeah, and it’s kind of like that. Like a lot of the almost most of the work I have in my room is
like, from people that I know. And, yeah, I think that’s part of it. Like, you can comprehend it because it’s so Most to you or something? Yeah, yeah. It’s really special. The night we went in was the opening, right? And it was the show is called Harry Potter. Yeah. And it was fucking so call.
It was such a like it’s such a vivid like excellent show was full of imagery. You know, we’ve had a lot of like very abstract and difficult shows that year last year and so it was it was cool to see something that was like, you know, these are all almost like morality Tales or something. They Aiden’s one would be like Distraction versus studious
nurse and my one, the one that I’m holding here would be like, you know, gluttony versus like abstinence or something. Yeah, let’s talk about these a little bit. Yeah, they’re funny. They’re like, they feel very contemporary and I think that was just going to make it up about 12 of them. Yeah, something like that. Yeah, 3x4. Yep.
All in the same, like kind of brassy brown but like old wooden. Yeah. Frames that like spray-painted gold frame. Yeah. And yeah, in them is Like I would say it’s like pretty garish stuff like yeah. It’s all these kind of like da chemo colors. Yeah, I’ve got like, blood and gashes. Yeah, and it’s in this like really thick acrylic.
Like you just see all these places in the media where it like bunches are totally. It’s pretty heaped on. Yeah, the composition is is full. It’s like so I’ll describe it. It’s got this big like, man with this kind of like, oh, super overweight body and he’s got like it looks like he’s got like animal ears on the top.
It’s like well, Oops face. Yeah, I mean, something like that. It’s like a grotesque and, and also, like gory gory and like, medieval Vibes. So, he’s this big man and he’s like, been a p amputated, like quadruple, amputee and it’s got this big belly and big breasts. And then there’s like these two figures standing at his
shoulders, one behind in one sort of in front, and it’s like, it looks like a sort of skeleton Wizard, and then like a demon lady with like purple hair. It’s fucking sick. Reminds me of Diablo 2 and like, you know, A bit of nipple showing and then, like, at his feet or at where his feet would be, is like, it looks like a woman has died.
Giving birth to this, like, miraculous child. The child is like covered in placenta and is like glowing and connected still by the umbilical and she’s like the kid can like walk somehow. Yeah. The kids standing somehow. Yeah. And you know what’s amazing about this like style to me is like, despite the like frankly fucking sick subject matter.
Like I just Love this. This subject matter we’ve been talk. We spoke a lot about like Oblivion themed shit last year and it’s still cool. Like his brushwork just has this amazing. Like the brush is that he’s using almost like hide the the depth of the knowledge that he has of this imaginary seen.
Like the more I look at it, the more details I see in it even though the brush Strokes are for the size of the painting, like they’re kind of medium-size, you know, they’re not I need a huge right. Okay. There’s some of them a huge that some of them are huge and it’s like somehow he’s like using them in the most amazing like,
suggestive way. Even with like fairly simple, like bright colors. They’re like, so so deep and like full of expression and like it just fucking blows my mind. So, this is painting, this is painting. So, and it’s cool. Like I’ll tell you listeners, like Matt has this like on his lap right now and I think was like, kind of getting lost in the painting.
Maybe for one of the first times you’ve seen. Seen it this close. I’ve been able to talk about it. I’ve been thinking about it and I’ve been like, looking at it really closely. Like I don’t let a couple of nights where I supposed to do with a painting, that you own. Yes, true. It’s like you could have fucking hole have it. You can touch it if you want. Like, am I allowed to like, yes you are, which is, which is
really important zactly. It’s like, yeah. If you, you know, if you have a favorite painting at like a big institution or something, you go back and see, you know, you go to the fucking big gallery and every time you go back you know there’s like a painting Waiting for you. Yeah, I know that feeling. Yeah. And then I remember last time I went to the egg when I first got back to Sydney and like they’d change the paintings and like
the one I had no no no. The first paintings I saw when I was a kid. Dude, they took away your victory at Waterloo. 1848 your favorite dude? That’s my favorite is like the life of a level. That’s the 16th century. Yeah. Rider actually what the the lemon.
Yeah. I was thinking about About I was writing like a poem about my banana. Yeah and I just got so obsessed and overwhelmed with it. Yeah that I felt like I understood still lives like on a deeper level from doing that activity yellows like bra you can get like overwhelmed by banana peel.
But even the fruit bro. Just the Peyton had a bra moment. I went back to that lemon like literally, yeah, that guy was taking it’s been years since I’ve seen that. Well yeah, but I was like this. I was like this bananas. Live. I’m like, it’s a fucking still live. Yes, yes know exactly. Yep, cool. Now as I said, I think I know what you’re saying. You definitely felt a full, holy force of this revolution, the
weight of this still life, like, you know, yeah, I’ve been trying to take still life photos for a long time and my only successful ones are like, pictures of like a sexy-looking meal that I upload straight to Instagram was like I’ve never really been able to do like with a see it with a fully serious face.
Unlike nrt still life photo just like I don’t have it in me or it’s or it’s too hard. I’m not skilled. I think it might be harder like, this is just shit talking. Yeah. It feels like it would be harder to do a still life photo. Yeah. Then a painting because you know, with those like oil paints. Yeah. There’s a real like, honoring of the subject. Yeah. That like the viewer feels.
Yeah. They’re like, look at this, you know, create like this artistic representation. Yes, the photo is. Okay, you just fucking press the button like someone else is just the banana. Yeah, someone asked me. What I’m taking photos of for this like book that I’m producing? Yeah. And I said to her that’s kind of like asking someone what their favorite song is and and then I
say I do like maybe the star goes no actually I was little, I was kind of like I was kind of like like the photos that I’m interested in taking our like sort of subject list in a way like that, they’re, they’re more like composition, they’re
interested in. Composition. And then if there happens to be like, you know, a face which is like the oldest subject. Maybe let’s say, I like the outline of someone like that’s, you know, like that’s a bonus or something, you know. I’ve got a whole like logic that I’m that I’m sort of working to just so that I can put some brackets around something, you know.
And yeah it’s just been it’s been the style that I’ve always taken photos in. So it’s interesting to like try and formalize it with myself, even with language a talking about a blank about nest. That what you’re saying? Hmm. Like when when someone asks you like what are they going to be about? I mean like she literally asked me like what I’m taking photos
of like yeah. And I thought it was it was a good question but I kind of blew it off as like yeah actually they exert sorry. Alice the exact same thing happened to Angel actually it New Year’s ask. Yeah. What do you write poems about? What are you writing them about? Like since I’ve been hyped on poetry and in the last couple months. Yeah. And I realize I didn’t answer
and then I thought about it, huh? That kind of shit. It that you think about when people ask you that, you know. Yeah, you know. Yeah, true people like and you’re like, fuck. What is my shit about? Yeah yeah. Just gave this like answer that at the time because I was pretty high and it was like this is like the best answer and you’re going to be so satisfied with this and then afterwards.
I hadn’t really give you an answer. Basically, all I said was like I think Angel was like, what is your theme? What are your things? Yeah yeah yeah yeah basically a pretty do true true. What’s the plot Up through and I was like, I’m just obsessed with form. Yeah.
Yeah. Well I care about his form. Yeah. And meaning has to come after for fuck. That’s kind of what I just said. Yeah. And it’s kind of what I think all artists know. Yeah. The hike. Uh-huh. True. True. Like meaning comes off to form. Yeah, like moss. Yeah, churning is like a bone of form. Whoa. Yeah.
Okay. Your turn with the Alvin Willie. What did you get my gonna go? I’m just gonna give a quick Alvin will. We because we kind of just did it pretty good. Yeah. And the style is pretty similar true, but I’ll give you a rundown of yeah. Those pictures and shit. So I haven’t even had it like, really good moment with mine
mmm-hmm, but I tell you, the title, I really like the title. It’s called young Master. Alexa are Edition so good. And then who’s this like character on the back? Oh, do I need to? Oh, it’s like his bird would like signature, Advertiser. You’ve got As well. Yeah, a little Tweety Bird. Got a little.
Yeah, I see that the because on the left. Yeah, we’ll post the pictures. Yeah. Yours is called on ibaba. The third. I see the third. Yeah. That is it. Yeah, man. Yeah, that’s only Baba. Fuck the story. So yeah, there’s a couple takes a couple reason that I grab this one. Hmm.
One it was because my two favorites had already been sold but house. Okay. Yeah, but I give you a quick rundown is super similar. We’re in like some kind of like big House. Yeah. Stately like yeah. Yeah, exactly. Maybe like a couple hundred years ago. Yeah. The guys were like so true. What’s he got? What’s that? She’s got, like a ruffled.
Yeah, curve at all. Exactly. And in the background there’s like some big, some nudes. Yeah. There’s like it’s like it looks like the kind of place where like, yeah, like an 18th century like englishman’s club like with where they would do weird, sexy, things in the secret room. Like that’s what that’s the energy that’s like this room has totally somewhere like Regal and
this year. Boy is kind of being tempted by. Yeah. This like sexy gesturing figure figure with like those same big like Blobby muscles. Yeah it’s like kind of come to me U like come to pleasure, come here over and yeah, come here, they’re wearing like, you know, nice Golden Ring. Yes. Again, the paint is like kind of blotchy and pooling and then
there’s another one of these. Yeah, kind of very Oblivion, like Thieves Guild. Yeah. Like that purple kind of, yeah, hovering behind Hind yeah. Our young Master Alexei. Yeah. And and Alexei is like writing he’s like he’s trying to write a fed-up. Yeah. Like red hair. Yeah. Looks like a nerd. Yeah. Like Angry. He’s like I just want to fucking
like, learn Latin. Yeah, exactly. He’s going to do my declension, he’s got big blocky. Yeah, like the curricula so I never noticed that. Yeah. And a couple reasons I got it. One of the big things for me when I think about like getting a work. Like obviously I’m not really a collector and I’m just starting But just from practice, like
from experience a little bit, it’s like, which of these Works do I want to live with like, which do I want to learn from? And I’m a little bit like, you know, I’m quite I’m not averse to like, prickly shit. So I’m not really thinking like, which will look the prettiest. Yes, total. Each one will be. Yeah, my parents would not
understand how we spent that much money on this. I’d be like, what the fuck? Like, ugly as fuck. Yeah, they’re dark and just to die for. Yeah, but Yeah, like I was thinking like, yeah, what? Which of these paintings can I like learn from, you know, if I’m gonna get the privilege of being able to spend so much time with it on my terms, true. So yeah, it was very much this
like tension of like yeah. Fuck. I’ve been working heaps and like you know there’s this desire to like let go a little bit but also like you know, get my fucking poetry and shit going. So I thought it would just be like a fun you know conversation partner. Yeah yeah. My mind and totally cool.
And once it’s totally doing that so far. Huh. Thanks: cheers, Alvin. All right. Cool. Anyway Nick on we go. So you think I gave you all of the Matt gogel has that I had but no I still have one. I have one to myself. I’ve got and it was it was cool
like, you know, like we did a bit of art handling to get the big ones to your house. I want one knows what these Maxwell is. We’ll talk about, we’ll talk about them in a second. But he’s a friend of ours and he lived with me for like a couple of years I know like a year or something. I don’t know a little while and he is a visual artist and like a designer.
He’s been doing like web and logo design you know? And he his style is like the opposite of Alvin’s really. Like it’s it’s it’s like just beyond devoid of subject to the point where like the form is like all that stands out really. You know and it’s but it’s not just Blank like that.
I think a lot of his works are rye and and, and like, with a wink sort of told I remember, he, we had this like fight in the house about like this table that he liked and me and the other house mate. Molly, didn’t like and we like literally had a fight about it. He like he wanted to keep it.
We wanted to get rid of it and we ended up getting rid of it but he I didn’t realize this until after he left that he did this really beautiful like study of the table. He did like a really gorgeous like little on On, you know, maybe four inch high piece of MDF like just a little bored. He did, like really lovely study over the table and I was like fuck like he really saw something in that, you know that
we would just like it doesn’t really work for this face, you know. So yeah, that’s Matt and and I’ve got one of his works here that I’ve nailed it to the wall so I’m not going to get it down for us but let me just end up and describe it real quick. It’s a series of like fixed Strokes on a black background that That all kind of have it
almost looks like one of those like, zen garden like, rake pattern things and it’s wonderful. It’s just like a meditation, like, with the barest, minimum of like visual subject matter, it’s really cool.
And yeah, that’s, that’s my Mac Go gorilla, but famously. My house was like the the only place in Sydney that you can see some of his work because he lived there and he brought it all with them, and I had these As paintings, I think there are 2 m square and they’re like a whole room, basically, if you
live anywhere within five kilometers of the city, that’s how big the room is, you know. And yeah, I just, I lived with them for, like, a year and it was really cool. And we talked about them a couple times, but then it was time to go. So, we had to hire a ute and get them to your house, which is where they now live. Yeah. So I got a pretty weird
situation going on at the moment. So the eye, as you said, those pains are fucking massive. Yeah, huge like yeah, I got But I had a big wall in my house like they can take up the whole. We talked about the size of them a little bit more. Let’s go full scale because it’s like, they’re they’re like, Gallery scale, you know, and they’re they’re they’re like in a sense, they’re not, I’m doing
air quotes, not for small, poke Newtown, Ashfield share houses, and then I was like, you know, putting them in there. Has this kind of beautiful like Defiance about it. That gesture is like no, I will live with art. Like I’m doing it even if it’s massive. Like, I think that’s really cool. You know. It’s really about the biggest artwork you could get away with if it was a sculpture that size
it would be like totally impracticable. Like you just couldn’t couldn’t live with that totally. And I think that’s one of the really exciting things about them, but yeah, I think they could, you know, there’s a sense. Yes, they have like massive scale but because they are so minimal like, let’s describe them that the to write and are they?
I think there’s a their big paintings. The very big 2 by 2 m. About one of them has a big Vertical line. I think it might be upside down in that picture, but whatever, as Adam pointed out, it’s up to you now and the other one has a big vertical line and then a
smaller horizontal line coming off of that, going to the right segmenting. The canvas that’s segmented into yeah, three sort of right? Yeah, that’s right. So, it makes like a big tall rectangle on the left and then a sort of big square shape and the top, right? And then beneath that, it sort of flattered Rectangular shape
and like just that you know alone is is now like generating like interest for my eyes to zoom around on because the three like the relationships between those squares. Now as looking the website and they have actually have titles, they’re called Fibonacci Sequence. I think fibonacci’s in the name anyway and another thing that he
pointed out to me when he left them there they’re kind of on long-term loan to us. Was that the The panels that these big rectangles and squares comprise are there different panels each, so it’s like a bit of aluminium and then a bit of
like something else, they’re like things that he found and he made the frame. So, if you look on the back of the frame, all of the lines are like backed up by wooden joists and like, you know, reinforcements and stuff and it’s framed in this really neat like fine wooden border all the way around. The are like yeah, really. This kind of like recessed. It’s so model.
Yeah, it looks so it’s deeply. It’s so fun. It’s like huge and also deeply modest. Yeah, it’s almost like what I was thinking was if you imagine like the space of an image and like how like aggressive it wants to be in like creating space and like being like, fuck
you, I’m in the room. Imagine an Alvin Willie at that scale it’s like and there were actually paintings in that show. That’s a bit more like that. I had some big one, I don’t know. They were here is the art of being someone else’s butt in that show and that is deployed sometimes right. It’s like we’re going to have, you know, this super hardcore imagery and it’s also going to
be like, fuck you, massive? Yeah we’re tell a whole Opera. See ya got a. Yeah. But what I kind of like about this is it’s like maybe in my reading is okay. The scale is its present this is and then you know to offset that it’s like okay well there’s this modesty in the framing and the imagery. You know, it’s funny though. I don’t know where the mat would
hate to hear this or whether he would like it. But Two people came to see them and they both thought it was the back. It was like what’s on the front? Yeah pick is and I thought that was kind of funny that’s like no one. Look I honestly think the back is as interesting as it is on as the front is on those paintings. If I fucking it’s already like, okay, well like let me say, I’ve
got them in my room right now because I wanted to hang them, but I got covid so I couldn’t go to get like a realist. Yeah, yeah, my rooms like pretty small. It’s about the same size as the room wearing maybe a little bit smaller, but it’s a bed. It’s all about. Yeah, it’s like okay, I need to say again. No one knows what room size releases, right? So it doesn’t matter, whatever. It’s a normal like bedroom size
room, but if it’s pretty small and it’s like doesn’t have much in at all. So the paintings are like an overwhelming presence in that room. Yep, in my bedroom right now. Like it’s almost like a shrine. Like, one is opposite my bad when I wake up. Yea, the other one is taking up almost the whole wall, and I
also have a fucking third match. Which is called 40, which is like a much smaller, but similar style, like white and black kind of minimalist painting. So I’m living in like a bit of like a matte G. Like Gallery having this / hellscape. Yeah, it is kind of always living in Escape for sure, one of my fantasies to like live in
the gallery church is called to overwhelm your living space. Like it’s been quite exciting and it definitely feels quite
What does it feel like it feels very.
I don’t. I don’t know if I like sacred is the word, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s like inducing me to want to be more creative. Yeah, you know, because I’m like waking up and I’m like have turned my living space. Into like quite a radical space. Yeah, totally totally. Yeah. I totally agree that these
things like energize us to do more, you know. Yeah. I might not be able to take them out, bro. I might have to leave him.
Make them the walls of your room. Yeah, went on to like fuck under them. The ya hear that? Ya beep redacted. Okay, cool. I think like we could say more there but yeah, we’ve done that Jay. Yeah we’ve done magic, he’s cool. It’s huge but it’s modest. That’s true.
Yeah, good day. Oh, we’re Rollin. Okay, cool. So second last in the fucking hung up collection. So I bought this from Casey Chan
when like a year ago, two years ago and I picked it out of his Instagram stories. Again, I’m an Instagram story shop at what can I say. The best way to do it. I CRI by our that’s a nice way to do it and he had like a head like a table of Surah of like work so he just fired on his or maybe there will Older works from the time and he was like,
yo I’m selling all these and I said, how about this one? I like screenshot it and then drew a circle in my phone and then send it back and he goes yeah sure and he eventually dropped it off and I’ve been living with it blissfully ever since I think it was the first like real artwork that I’ve bought from someone in Sydney and it is a sort of a very
stately looking earn a tits. At its core, but then pressed onto the side are all these figurines and figures. So there are those, they’re like, molds made out of those old green army. Men Like Toy Soldiers. Little toy soldiers. I used to have these as a kid
actually. Do you ever have those? Yeah, that’s sick. The fucking bad and some of them got concept confiscated on the plane. Once was a heartbreaking. What was like my grandma’s of like to me because of like, 9/11 shit. This was pre 9/11 homie. What That is noticed for the first time, I’ve seen this a few times, but it’s like all military imagery. Yes. Like this one’s like a tank. You’re shooting.
And is it like an assault rifles military and like, cute colors, like blues, and yellows and pinks like? Yeah. Do you know who this guy is? That’s Mao Zedong. Yeah, got some like military history. Shit going on. Exactly. Yep. It’s like, it’s really funny and fun and the colors are just like
gorgeous. It’s just got this real like zest to it. And I think it’s one of his, like, most, like, like, joyful pieces, like he’s done a lot of beautiful works. And like, if you see him on Instagram, like his fucking, his current stuff is just Exquisite. Like, it’s so detailed. We were just saying like you kind of you kind of fucking buy it right now.
But yeah, this one is is like it’s got a slightly different like The to it, it’s like fun. And like, a little bit silly, which I love, you know, because he’s like, jarring juxtapositions of actually, don’t use the J word, these jarring, like, contrasts of subject matter. It’s, this is like, it’s got, like, a nun uncolored, like
base, or like unknown? Yeah, it’s just like glazed. Like, clear glaze, the glaze Horse. Let’s go. I think, like a kind of ugliness to. All right. Like, sing, I feel like it stands out. It looks more like Like an art of ours to me than it does. Like you know of Oz for flowers, not only because it’s you know,
the type of like these big lumpy Toy Soldiers is super unorthodox and not what you would expect. You know, you’re not going to get this at like a nice Summerhill like true. Cause mommy’s Gallery. Yeah. And that is yeah. Totally playing with like the penis and baby blues and steer and not to mention like a big mouse. It don’t ya like what do you
call this? Like a the jablow boss leader. Yeah yeah the best thing about the other to me makes it look like construction or like unfinished or like you know it’s got this intentional kind of ugliness of. Yeah you would never see this color know so it’s kind of distancing itself from the design object like the vas.
True that usual language. Yeah this would also be like the base color for like a lot of like, Asian ceramics that were like used to seeing painted with like blue, you know, stuff. So it’s kind of Of like playing with that to True. Totally? Yeah. Fucking Ceramics is so cool. It’s another one.
That’s good for the home. Yeah. I was saying I could put like flowers and set this on the table. You know, for fun. If I wanted to idly, if I had a table that would be really exciting and I think you should do that. Yeah, yeah, fuck yeah, dude, cool. It’s nice. I’m glad we got to talk about a 3D object. All right, should we smash out the last painting? So and then my, my one other one that I want to talk about is an old Jackie delay.
See, which is this really like it’s I’ve put it in a like I think the best spot in the house because I really love it. It’s like grown on me and growing on me this painting.
And it is a figure like this face. That’s kind of distorted and it’s kind of like it’s hand is like clasped over its mouth. And it’s got these wonderful like earthy tones. Like it’s got a white color but it’s also got like Browns and mustards and like, is there a green on it too? And standing up looking at it?
Yeah, the background is like a very like Woodland, kind of. Yeah. Yeah, camo greens. Yeah. And me it around and you can see the like whatever was behind it. Yeah, super visible. Like yeah Brown of the canvas is everywhere. Yeah and and there’s like painted like the the background kind of in little Stripes out onto the frame.
It’s like just a cheap frame but I just I love it. And there’s red kind of. Yeah, it almost it goes from the canvas over like The Ridges of the frame and then the frame has like a kind of inner Ridge and an outer Ridge. And Man goes all the way around it. Yeah. And some shit like that can be really exciting. Even like the inside of the
frame, like the recess of the frame has been painted. Yeah. Because it’s such a subtle gesture, right? Yeah. To go from like we’re in the painting and we’re out of the paint. Yeah. But like on a like, aesthetic or conceptual level, you really are like, exploding. The whole thing. Do you have any? Yeah, Toby, Fitch’s poems or whatever. Yeah, it’s still encapsulated in this tiny book and it’s still on a page.
Yeah. This is like a local poet, who kind of? Yeah. What. He does like concrete poetry. So what’s it? Like imagery and kind of what looks absurd, you know, completely blows up your expectation of like a left-to-right. Yeah, line. Yes. And it is still such a quiet gesture because I can’t books clothes, or then nothing’s really happening on that
painting. But like, really, you’re exploding the whole thing. Yes. Right? Yeah, yeah, quietly. And it takes an approach to see that. So, like I’ll finish saying where it is. I think it’s the best spot in the house because it’s the first painting you see when you open the door. So, Time I come home. I’m greeted by this like Sentinel that’s just looking. It’s like God in my front door.
It’s got really good like Vibes about it. So yeah that one is also kind of on loan from Matt. So thanks Matt. Thanks Jackie cool. Fucking oath. I think you should also like this is just been fun because I’ve seen these paintings but I haven’t seen them with you. You just do this with your friends paintings and art. Yeah. Like ask about the things they have.
Yes. Talk about them together. Yes. Because now every time I come here I’m going to be like cool. Exactly. Yeah. Like just just What have ya? Stop fucking buying drugs and stop buying artwork? Yeah, people that’s Jesus. All right cool. Let’s wrap it up with like a little bee throwback lej, son
Easter egg which was mostly in your possession and is now at my place. Yeah, we’re sharing it. Yeah. But I think it’s really cute. I’m really interested to hear like what it did for you and what you did with it. Yeah, cool was at a show. I can’t remember what show but it was that Paris. That was that Paris I don’t know which exhibition it was I
remember we can find out but yeah, okay well there’s always in. The thing was one that we really liked if you have been to that Gallery you should go. It’s Fisher really looking forward, R by surviving whatever they’ve got on. Now you probably can’t afford the work from Paris are not anymore. Hey maybe a little bit maybe anyway yeah but yeah so there’s this artist a Json who I really really like she’s got a show
somewhere Regional at the moment. Maybe we’ll drop it in the show now. Yeah. But and you doing there called like nipple flowers, everything. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they’re great. Yeah, really sick. And yeah, we won’t talk about the whole thing but only about 10 like palm-sized Ceramics. Yeah. Which we were sent one. Yes. Is one that we spoke about.
Well. Yeah. Like Coachella story. Like so we like we’ve never met EJ before and we went to the show and we just loved the Ceramics and we did our little like ten minute piece on them and then we go to message in the Instagram being like, hey I really love that. Like, thank you so much, let me know. Which one was your favorite?
And I’ll give you one and I thought those so sweet and then I run this thing called concrete dreams. And at one of the early ones, it was like the first or the second one AJ came along and just goes, like, pulls me aside and goes, like, hold out your hand and I, and like, she puts the like little figurine in my hand and I’m like, cool. I stick it in my pocket and I forgot because I was like
running a whole show as my second one, you know. I was like fucking freaking out and it took me until I got home like all messed up and I took my jacket off and I was like, oh my God, fucking cool. Cool. So then it was on my dresser like next to the mirror, so kind of like, watched me get ready. Every time I went out, you know? Yeah, mine has a similar place. It’s so small like yeah, I mean
it’s tiny whining. It’s made by squeezing in your in your palms. And yeah, so it’s like a little like charcoal black like hand size palm sized lump of clay. And then it has this beautiful like droopy glistening like tiny fried egg on to you and it is really cool too because it’s especially just like taken out of its lineup.
I don’t think people Clock it? Yes, something art or, you know, it doesn’t quite sure, you know. Yeah, yeah, sure honey. Little nickname. Yeah, sure. And especially once you just like, tuck it away on your dresser, it was unlike my work desk for a bit which I really liked again. It was fulfilling this kind of like, I don’t know. Take like reminding me of Art in
like this really nice way because I got like pick it up and have it right there. I was like, I’m not just, you know, grinding and also yeah yeah can’t have our torque or but now Mantle like with the Alvin Willie, and with this like weird, like I got a tiny vintage. It’s actually like a Wilkinson Sword case shop ages ago.
So it’s just like amongst the knick-knack. Yeah. Yeah. It’s totally cool. Huh. It’s still catches my eye. Yes, really fun. Nice one. Yeah. And that was episode like fucking 3 or something. Oh yeah, the first season. So just to show our age. All of a sudden. We’re now. Three tuna were three things. Three seasons old.
Yeah, fuck. Yeah. I never heard that story. That’s cool. I loved it. Yeah. I love that. Living in your pocket for a couple hours. Yeah, it was great. It really like sort of traveled home with me. Yeah, fuck yeah, dude. Well that was warming for my soul. Good. So that’s a that’s the permanent collection on display to friends and guests of the Pod only everyone else.
You just gotta get your own damn art.
All right. So there’s this new form of Art in the news recently. They’re cold and FM. New form of a text expression. New form of new at this point, but yeah. Anyway, everyone’s fucking mad about the Apes. Everyone’s got a fucking everyone’s got to tell you my love story of write.
Something really mean to say about the a tell ya history with a tell me your story. So I saw just like the guys, it was like a Post over mean, probably on my credit or something or maybe on Instagram. And it was like the guy being like someone stole my Apes. You saw this too. Is like a Twitter. Yeah, someone stole my and he
has like someone hacked me and stole all my tapes. All my hopes are gone. And in here, he’s like DP is like, one of these. Oh, yeah, that’s right. Yeah. So, the comment is like that sucks. But like, since you don’t own it anymore, like those changes. Yeah, that’s funny. I like that’s fine. Whatever. Is he a little meme story? Yeah, but I just told you about
the Aesthetics of the Apes. Like I was like, oh, that’s ugly, like a stupid. It just looks like all the other NFL and then like some time went by and I saw it and I sorta had time to get under mask. Now I really don’t remember the context but I saw like a series of the Apes so not just one in. Yeah. They’re like thousands of them.
Yeah maybe it was like 6 or 8 and I was just had like a moment of like I don’t know what it is. It’s like when someone might you’re on a date with me but you’re like offered by any and all of a sudden. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like I got a warm like tingle of. I like this. Whoa ain’t got touched by the Apes.
Yeah. That’s cool though. Like that’s such a hard time, really? I like this is I’m leaving all day at face by Ken FTS at the moment neither but I don’t go all the fuss is about. I feel quite like lukewarm. Yeah. Like you like I yeah I’m really be fucked to talk about it but yeah. Did you watch the Brad tramel and ft report? No he’s basically like it’s a
Ponzi scheme. It’s a pyramid scheme and like it’s not worth it for small artists and like all the big players Is get to like just make more money or whatever. Cool. Whatever I’d be happy. I feel like he’s like like everyone’s really mad about Krypton and if she’s right now which is like fine whatever but I feel like there will be like one or two little grains of like
usefulness utility from this stuff that ends up being valuable later on. I think that’s the like for sure that’s like what if anything could be exciting about it. That’s what’s up? I’m excited like the blockchain stuff, maybe not the nft. It like strikes me as, like such a weird, like, I don’t know, like a big blind spot that
everyone has been talking about it where they can’t help. But divorce, the imagery that they see from the technology that well, that can’t divorce it. You mean, do they can’t divorce and exactly what I mean. They’re like seeing these, like dumb ape. So, whatever the like, it’s just, like, deviantART or whatever. And like, yeah, yes, it sucks. Like all that fucking sucks. Like there’s no good art and on
nft. Right now. Let’s just make the blanket statement. Yeah. But like I said, isn’t it? Like genuinely is exciting that I could sell a picture. Yeah. And then someone else could sell it. And I get 10%. And then someone else doesn’t and I get 10%. Like, that’s fucking beautiful. That’s so cool. But that system is not genuinely in place right now.
So like I think like, there’s lots to be mad about but like just the fact that it’s like boring art is like it’s just like I don’t know. Just seems like besides the point just about to go Statics is yeah, but yeah Point. Yeah it’s just like it’s like they just invented cameras for the first time. That’s kind of what it’s like and everyone’s complaining that it’s just, like really blurry
pictures, you know, it’s like I don’t know. It’s like that’s not really what’s up? Totally about it. Bigger grew up like quick side point and next year we’re going to be doing our nft like the via huh I got this day I got it like Eminem able to get my I got like a 14 year old step brother. Who’s into like this kind of shit. Yeah like really into drawing
and I was like at Christmas. I was like prodding him. I was like Hey like you want me to be your dear a lefty dealer I’ll take 10% of each sale as well, but yeah, I think and I think we should come back to that idea this year. I listened to a really interesting new models podcast, about exactly that, like the second-hand Market royalties for
artists. Yeah. Which is huge, especially in cases, where, you know, and artwork sells for, you know, say 3,000 Grand and then 300 Grand. Yeah, you know, not, not too long. After I know, moments the artist gets nothing. Yeah, so but it was interesting doing You are those podcasts, we
can drop the link as well. If you’re interested in like Art Market shit, which I’m sure you are actually yeah listener that they were talking about. They’ve been trying to do versions of this since like the 70s like Hammer. That’s right. Yeah. Well T’s Market for art but yes. Like they think you know, blockchain might be the first time like to make potatoes now
my actually me attractive. Yeah, to do something. Yeah. But yeah, I like let us know. I would love to talk about and learn more about like Art Market shin. With you guys especially on like a local level total. It does feel like a bit of a black box to. Yes right? Yes absolutely yeah yeah. We’re still like well I’m sure
everyone kind of has this like imposter syndrome thing where you always sort of feel like an outsider. But yeah the art world like has that, you know it’s just it’s just got this like extra level of it, you know, just because yeah sure. Yeah. The market is is a tricky thing and people like artists tend to be sometimes a little bit like yeah, on the one hand have Told
to rapidly Embrace their fucking, you know in a capitalist and become the own like industry. Their own solo industry and hasselt would grind Rise & Grind. We Mission, you’re scared of it. Yeah, you know For the Love of the Game. Yeah I mean market and money is Juicy and I’d love to learn more. Totally.
Fuck. Yeah, well that’s it. You can find us on Instagram at hung up W and all the artists that we spoke about. We will link to in the thing. And that’s it, dude. Yeah, I’ll fucking this chicken. I’ll see you later. We’re going to eat. Oh yeah. One thing. What’s up? We’re back on like a regular.
Fortnightly release schedule now. So, we took some time off and now you can expect us every two weeks or two weeks. We needed a holiday after that book in, we deserve a Hustle the, and you know what, Rise & Grind? It actually was restorative. It was yeah, I was really. I feel restoring. There you go. My name is Matt and I hadn’t
hung up the day you on Instagram. See you next time Elena.
